Where the light rests
Contact 4
The glass vessel was blown with alternating translucent and darker bands that create zones of exposure and shade, allowing spirulina microbes to experience intervals of light and rest. This approach draws on practices common in DIY spirulina culturing, where light is manually modulated by masking parts of a jar or using timers to establish day–night cycles.
Spirulina cells also shift their position within the vessel, moving upward to access light or settling at the bottom to reduce exposure. Rather than relying on external controls, the vessel itself functions as the regulating surface, embedding rest into the object. The intention was to respond to the culture’s need for both growth and recovery.
